Utilizing Student-Owned Devices

University of Idaho

Students are accustomed to having nearly constant access to digital devices outside of the classroom, so why not find ways to incorporate the use of student-owned devices inside the classroom? Here are three possibilities to assist teachers with integrating student-owned devices to enhance lessons, increase communication, and engage students:

Poll Everywhere
enables you to ask a questions and get real time responses from students via text messaging, Twitter, or a web browser. View responses as they appear live on the web. The free version allows 40 responses per poll.

Remind 101
allows free and easy one-way communication with students and parents. Students and parents can sign up by text message or email and personal information remains private. Create up to ten classes and schedule messages in advance. Great tool for reminding students and parents about homework, conferences, permission slips, events, etc.

Socrative
is a free student response system that students can access via smartphones, laptops, or tablets. Provides immediate visual representation of student responses. Offers real-time formative assessment, exit tickets, quizzes, games, and reports.
